Though winter will be shortly upon us, now is a great time to get outside.

Think about it; it won’t be long until the sun sets mid-afternoon, and we spend most days huddled around the fireplace (or space heater!).

Why not change things up? There are so many benefits to being active at this time of year!

Several studies report that actively participating in greenspace activities involving parks, trails, and forests decreases the risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. You also get a long-lasting mood boost from a simple 15-30 minute walk every day – especially beneficial to those that suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder.

So how can you incorporate more greenspace activities into your late-fall routine?

One of the easiest ways is to reduce screen time, and I have a few tips for you to do just that.

I mean, how many times have you sat down with your phone or laptop thinking, ‘I’ll just spend a few minutes checking my email’…

…only to look at the time and see that it’s been two hours!

  • Try leaving your phone near the door or in another room.
  • Set your phone to ‘Do Not Disturb’ and avoid constant distracting pings.
  • Instead of endlessly surfing Netflix or boring cable channels, go for a brisk walk to the park and back.

Another way of incorporating nature into your life is to make it routine. Set up a specific time weekly (or bi-weekly) to visit a local greenspace with your family.

Children love one-on-one time (again, no distractions!).

Instead of playing endless rounds of Candy Crush, you can help them identify animals, mushrooms, and other native plants. You might even make a game of it, seeing who can collect the most pine cones. Use the pine cones later for Christmas gifts and crafts.

Imagine the health benefits for you and your family, and also the memories made! What an excellent way to recharge your batteries!

After implementing a new greenspace routine, you might feel more clear-headed. So why not put your new mindfulness to work in planning more ways to improve your life?

One of the best ways to do that (aside from returning to nature) is to plan for your financial future.
