I know, I know. Halloween is over, but I couldn’t resist bringing this up — Bram Stoker was born this week in 1847.
Stoker created the character ‘Dracula’ in his 1897 novel of the same name. The story is presented as a collection of letters, journal entries, and newspaper articles and tells a tale of a solicitor (Jonathan Harker) staying at Dracula’s famous castle.
Harker flees once he learns of his host’s dark secret, and the story shifts into Dracula’s move to England to terrorize the countryside – and ends with his demise at the hands of Abraham Van Helsing.
‘Dracula’ became one of the most well-known works of English literature, with the character himself becoming one of the most recognizable and quintessential vampires in the media today. (That, or Robert Pattinson…)
There have been countless (see what I did there?) adaptations of the story and character throughout the years, and I’m sure there will be more as time goes on. So the reign of bloodsuckers shall continue forever.
I doubt Bram Stoker himself could have foreseen how popular his character would become when he wrote his novel. It shows us that what we do can lead to unexpected things in our future and the future of the world itself.
Dracula himself may be the concoction of a writer, but bloodsuckers are all too real. Not literal bloodsuckers, but the ones who sap up your money day-by-day.
