There’s this great movie that came out in the 90s… maybe you’ve seen it?
Congo (based on the Michael Crichton novel) came out in 1995. It starred a much younger Laura Linney, Ernie Hudson, and Tim Curry as members of an exceptionally treacherous and (spoiler alert) ill-fated expedition to the Virungas region of the Congo jungle.
Every member of that journey had their unique reason for being there, and their own specific ‘endgame’ – their goal.
Along for the ride was a primatologist who intended to return Amy (a mountain gorilla who he’d cared for and even taught sign language to) back to the jungle.
Laura Linney’s character (Karen Ross) joined the expedition to acquire a rare diamond that promised to revolutionize the communications company she worked for and be reunited with her ex-fiancé, who had gone missing in a previous mission to find that same diamond.
Tim Curry played shady money-obsessed Romanian ‘philanthropist’ Homolka, who sought out the Lost City of Zinj and the diamonds hidden there. Ernie Hudson was Monroe, a mercenary guide whose goal was simply to get paid to lead the voyage.
On this mission, they uncovered several dangers – murderous gorillas, rampaging hippos, corrupt government officials, and even a volcanic eruption. If you’ve never seen the movie, you should. It’s no Jurassic Park, but the special effects hold pretty well by today’s standards!
No one (us included) could have foreseen the danger that awaited the expedition when our stars set off on their quest. But to be fair, who actually plans for something like that?
Life’s everyday bumps and bruises; however, you CAN plan for. And you don’t need a mercenary, a primatologist, or Laura Linney to make and execute the expedition known as your life. You just need a financial advisor – and that’s where we come in.
