Today, we celebrate two things: the fact that January (aka the Monday of the year) is over, and a very important unofficial holiday. National Freedom Day!

This holiday dates back to 1947, one year after the death of Major General Robert Wright, to celebrate freedom from slavery – one of the most shameful chapters in our history. Its roots come from the ratification of the 13th amendment, which finally outlawed the inhumane institution in December 1965.

Wright was a former slave who believed that there should be a day to celebrate freedom for all U.S. citizens. Since February 1, 1865 is when Abraham Lincoln signed off on the 13th amendment, this day was the logical choice.

It’s difficult to imagine what life in our country would be like if the practice of slavery had never been abolished – after all, the scars of this horrible period still affect us even 160 years later. I’m thankful that it was outlawed and that the U.S. continues to be a symbol of unity and freedom to the entire world, even despite the divisive events of 2020.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate how fortunate we are to have all of our liberties, like freedom of expression and speech, the ability to live our lives as we wish, and to pursue whatever dreams we can think up.

You can also exercise your freedom by preparing for the retirement you’ve always wanted. Even if you have a plan, it’s vital that you review it regularly.
