A few years ago, a comedy-horror film was released during December.
If you’re like me, you might be shaking your head and thinking, “Horror films? During the holidays?”
Yes. And it was rather strange.
The film was called Krampus, based on the Austrian folklore story about a beast-like demon creature that roams the area, scaring little kids and punishing the bad ones.
Talk about killing the holiday spirit!
Krampus is St. Nicholas’ evil accomplice. Although St. Nick rewards nice little boys and girls, it’s Krampus who is said to capture the naughty children by throwinh them in his sack and then taking off.
During the first week of December, young men will dress up as the Krampus (especially on the eve of St. Nicholas Day, December 6), and will frighten children with clattering chains and bells.
The point is to scare kids into choosing good behavior, and not bad. Whatever works, I suppose! Although I admit I like the image of a jolly St. Nick much more than the ghastly demonic face of Krampus.
