You must have heard the stories by now.

Warriors of social injustice, riding in on an imaginary steed to give hell to whoever crosses their path and wrongs them.

They are called “Karens” on the internet – a name that evokes not only fear, but also disdain. But what exactly makes a Karen?

A Karen’s defining characteristics are “entitlement, selfishness, a desire to complain”, and that a Karen “demands the world exist according to her standards with little regard for others, and she is willing to risk or demean others to achieve her ends.”

They’re also known for demanding to speak with management at an establishment over the slightest inconvenience. Some other stereotypes used include:

  • anti-vaccination beliefs
  • excessive use of Facebook
  • a bob haircut with blonde highlights (Kate Gosselin is often depicted as a visual representation). This haircut is, for this reason, called the “can-I-speak-to-your-manager” haircut.

Unfortunately, the term “Karen” has evolved into a pejorative word, drawing ire from those legitimately named Karen, and with good cause! Imagine your own name being used to describe awful behavior that you are not even responsible for.

Nevertheless, the internet is ablaze with stories of encounters with those they would refer to as a “Karen”. This trend seems to have only been worsened by the pandemic, as more and more businesses restrict entry or enforce item limits in stores.

While some of the stories of encounters with entitled people are true (there are some truly unpleasant people out there!), perpetuating a stereotype and generalizing anyone who happens to share the same name as the stereotype is unfair at best.

Often, ‘Karens” are deeply passionate people who simply want to right the perceived wrongs they encounter in their day to day lives. It’s just that the way they go about it can leave a bad taste in your mouth.
