Let’s go back in time today and talk about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

For starters, did you know that the Seven Wonders are called that because of language evolution?

In the 4th century BC, Greek conquests opened up previously inaccessible Egyptian, Babylonian, and Persian civilization to Greek travelers. These new sights were breathtaking to these brave voyagers, and they spread the word to everyone they knew.

The ancient Greeks called these sites “theamata“, which means “sights”. Later, language evolved, and it became “thaumata” – or wonders!

In essence, the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were simply a travel guide! Incredible.

Because we humans are never content to leave things as they are, they’ve actually updated the list of seven wonders. In 2001 an initiative was started by the Swiss corporation New7Wonders Foundation – they put together an online vote to choose the top contenders from a list of 200 potential sites.

Previously, the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were: the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

The updated list: the Great Wall of China, the city of Petra, Christ the Redeemer (Brazil), Machu Picchu (Peru), Chichen Itza (Mexico), the Colosseum (Rome), and the Taj Mahal (India)!

Even though only seven sites won the vote, I think we can all agree that the world is an incredible place, and as humans, we’ve created some stunning pieces of architecture.
