Let’s kick this off with the recognition that Twitter can be a minefield and a sinkhole from which many enter and few escape.

But there are a few gems to be found…

One recent discovery is called “Weird History.” The curator is one Andrew Rader, PHD – an author, MIT Scientist, and collector of obscure facts. Here’s a sampling of some of the fun facts he’s uncovered:

  • President Andrew Jackson had a pet parrot, who was known for having an amazing repertoire of curses. It’s said that during Jackson’s funeral, the parrot had to be removed because it was shrieking profanities.
  • For the Romans, March was the FIRST month of the year in their original calendar. Hence you wind up with “Sept’ember” = 7th month, “Oct,ober” = 8th month, and “Nov,ember” = 10th month.
  • After the US military, the second largest consumer of explosives in the world is Disney. (They do a bang up job with fireworks.)
  • Even though you’ve probably heard they were wooden, in reality, George Washington’s false teeth were actually made from elephant ivory and walrus tusks.
  • Founding Father Ben Franklin – known as an inventor, writer, entrepreneur, and diplomat – also had a wonderful sense of humor. He wasn’t trusted to write the Declaration of Independence because it was feared he would sneak jokes into it.
  • The first known children’s book was written back in ancient Rome. It included recipes for winemaking and beer brewing.

Finally…

  • Magic Tricks used to be called “hanky panky.” (Now we know why no one trusts magicians.)
