Yep, I’m still talkin’ about the Netflix series, The Legend of Bruce Lee.

In his all-too-brief life, Bruce Lee managed to turn the world of martial arts on its collective head. He challenged everything about how martial arts was taught.

And his competitors were completely blindsided.

If the series is accurate, Lee didn’t view his competitors as his enemy. He viewed them as mentors. As a “twentysomething,” his goal was to learn as much as he could from his competitors so that he could blend their strategic moves with his own martial arts discipline.

He took lessons from boxing, karate, judo… anything that could be used in his own brand of kung fu, he took it.

In the film series, he was constantly called “arrogant” for challenging martial arts masters who were older and more experienced. But Bruce didn’t care. If they allowed a sparring session, he was good with it.

Soon, he won the grudging respect of his competitors for his lightening-speed skills. And they eventually became professional friends.

Respect isn’t easy to get when it’s from highly qualified experts. And it’s really tough to earn when someone thinks you’re an egotistical brat. But Bruce showed respect to his competitors from the very start. Then later, his integrity sealed the deal.
