Recently, we watched the Netflix series The Legend of Bruce Lee. It’s a good series, but there are 50 episodes, so pace yourself accordingly.

The film follows Bruce – from his days at a Hong Kong high school, to relocating to the United States, to his rise in popularity with Hollywood, and then finally his tragic death at the young age of 32.

I was surprised to discover that Bruce was rather unlikeable when he was younger. Brash, arrogant, and over-confident in his martial arts abilities, Bruce often alienated his teachers, his peers, and especially his parents.

He was the quintessential “bull in a china closet.”

Wherever he went, he’d end up causing trouble and chaos. But –  he also brought honor to his fellow Chinese countrymen. He won a prestigious high school boxing tournament – a first for a Chinese student. He had a strong personality and a relentless passion for improving his martial arts moves.

As his famous Master Ip Man said, “Bruce… you either love him or hate him.”

I did end up admiring Bruce for his discipline and consistent efforts toward becoming the best at whatever he did (if it had to do with movement). He wasn’t keen on studying for his school classes, but when it came to Kung Fu and Wing Chung, he was a voracious learner.
