Remember the refrain from that classic Thomas Dolby song of the 80s?
SCIENCE!
She may have blinded me with science, but that only whetted my appetite for learning more about oddball experiments and other mad scientist gimcracks.
Which led me to this discovery:
Christies, the renowned auction house, recently announced they were taking bids on a collection of century-old patents for robots, wireless electric energy, an ozone-producing apparatus, and much more – all the brainchildren of celebrity inventor Nikola Tesla.
According to Christies, they’re offering:
“An extraordinary collection of Tesla’s patents, including those for the invention of radio (disputed by Marconi), the ‘Tesla coil’ and power transmissions systems, remote-controlled devices, AC motors, generators, incandescent and arc-lighting, transformers, and many others.”
A legend in his own time, Tesla – the rival of Edison and inventor of Alternative Current (AC) – has gained even more fame in recent years thanks to his portrayal in many novels, comic books, cartoons, and film. This includes a memorable depiction by the late David Bowie in the movie “The Prestige,” in which the not-so-mad scientist invented a nifty electro-replicating device.
The collection of patents was given an initial estimated value of between $150,000 to 200,000 – but who knows what wonders you could discover?
But before you place your bids, I’m sorry to disappoint you: these patents predate Tesla’s infamous “Death Ray” inventions, so you’ll have to figure that one out on your own (if world domination’s your primary goal).
