A friend recently went to purchase a new guitar – he was excited because his local guitar shop was having a sale.

He waited 30 minutes in the socially-distanced line to get into the store, then quickly told them the guitar he wanted: a Martin. Then he bought it.

There was just one problem – they made my friend feel rushed in the process.

The store was only allowing two customers in the store at a time. With the lineup of impatient customers waiting outside, they didn’t allow anyone to give their instruments a test drive.

Those who have been in music stores know what I mean.

If you walked into any before the pandemic restrictions, you’d not only hear a soundtrack coming through the store’s speakers, but various riffs played by customers throughout the store.

So, when my friend got home, he took a closer look at the guitar’s neck and noticed it was bowed. He peered inside, toward the neck and saw that the hole that holds the truss rod (which keeps the guitar neck straight) looked empty!

He was not happy.

He tried to call the store to explain the problem. They didn’t answer. He drove back to the store to see if he could exchange it or get a refund.

He discovered that the truss rod was in there—it was just so far up the neck that it was almost impossible for musicians to tweak it on their own.

My friend finally decided to buy a Breedlove instead, where he could clearly see (and access) the truss rod.

Even if you’re not a musician, I’m sure you can appreciate my friend’s frustration. If he hadn’t been rushed or felt pressure to buy quickly, he would have noticed the truss rod issue and dealt with it right then and there.
