You know I like my chicken fried
And cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio on
– “Chicken Fried,” Zac Brown Band
If you haven’t heard that song, it’s catchy. After all, it’s talking about one of the most popular menu items in our country… fried chicken.
Fried chicken is a greasy, deliciously indulgent comfort food enjoyed all over the world. But did you know it didn’t originate in our own backyard?
Scottish chicken-frying methods were combined with West African seasoning traditions to create one of the world’s favorite guilty pleasures.
July 6 is National Fried Chicken Day, and yes, it’s a real thing. KFC, Popeye’s, Chick-Fil-A, and other restaurants offer discounts and special menu items to celebrate the ultimate easy meal.
Here are a few fun ways to celebrate:
Do it yourself
Find a recipe, hit the kitchen, and dive in. Serve the results to family and friends. They’ll probably love you for it. You can still use “Shake and Bake” – that makes it super-simple.
Don’t be boring
Traditional buttermilk fried chicken is delicious, but on this special day, waken things up a little! Try finding an authentic Southern restaurant in your area and get some Nashville-style “Hot Chicken,” – if you haven’t tried it before and you love all things spicy, you’re in for a treat! Don’t forget to have a glass of milk nearby.
Treat your co-workers
Fried chicken is traditionally a family meal shared from a common bucket, bowl, or plate. Now that many of us are back in the office (thanks, COVID), surprise your co-workers by carting a giant bucket ‘o’ chicken to the office and enjoying it during lunch. Make sure to bring plenty of napkins. Nobody wants greasy keyboards.
When it comes to digging into a delicious meal, we’re big fans. Fried chicken may be the main event, but a meal isn’t complete without all the side items. So, don’t forget the mashed potatoes, gravy, and biscuits—not to mention dessert.
