I admit I like to read stories from those who have been through some rough patches because it’s inspiring. It’s often tempting to think that if our world has shifted in a major way, that life will somehow no longer deliver joy or happiness.
But that, of course, isn’t true.
For instance, those who survived the Great Depression recall memories that are almost foreign to us today, even during a pandemic and some states experiencing stay-at-home orders.
One 91-year-old woman, Pauline, remembers her high school days:
“What I remember most is my high school days (1932-1936). We never received new books issued to us. At the end of the school term, we would all get a book, scotch tape and eraser. It was our job to mend the book, erase any marks and make the book presentable so that the next class could use them without trouble.”
Now I’m not sure about you, but most younger people today do not mend their books. They may try to sell a used textbook but if it’s marked with yellow highlighter or notes — well, that’s just the way it is.
Few people repair things anymore or preserve a textbook by taping it if needed and erasing any notes made in the margins.
