I discussed trimming down and maintaining your casual wardrobe in my last email. Now I bring you the second half of our Overhaul Your Wardrobe “New Year, New You” 30-Day Challenge!
This time, we’re keeping it professional! Today, we’ll be discussing ways to improve your work and formal wardrobe. Let’s dress you up with the following tips:
Tip #1: Spruce up your shirts. This is the easiest thing you can do to update your work wardrobe. Dress shirts can be relatively affordable. Get rid of any ‘well-loved’ shirts and replace them with basic colors that can be used to create multiple outfits. Pass on flashy patterns or trends that will get dated. Women’s tops are a little more complicated – a general rule is to opt for simple pieces that make sense based on the season. Black or white shirts are always in style. You can always change things up with signature jewelry pieces or scarves.
Tip #2: Be selective with your pants. How many pairs of pants do you own? Do you really need that many? If some are in good shape, consider using a few pairs (storing the rest) and replacing them as they get worn. Black dress pants and skirts go with almost any shirt/top combination, so be sure to add some to your wardrobe if you haven’t already.
Tip #3: When the other shoe drops. Don’t go crazy on work or formal footwear. A nice pair of leather wingtips can last years. For ladies, a few different pairs (depending on the season) work well; a pair of flats or slip-ons, a pair of heels, and a pair of winter boots should do the trick. Just be sure to invest in good pairs – discount department store shoes will wear down faster and look tired.
Tip #4: Keep it classy. Formal wear should be the easiest part of your closet to maintain. For men, a good quality suit is a must. To keep things fresh, swap out your generic work ties for silk ties or even a bowtie if your personality allows. A classic black dress and a fun summer dress for weddings or parties go a long way for ladies. You really only need 2-3 items, and you’ll be able to cycle your formal wear for a few seasons (or years!)
I’m sure there’s a growing clothing donation bag after this challenge!
