We’ve all been there; you’re at your favorite department store, list in hand. But then… you walk past a display that catches your eye.
You never actually thought you wanted what’s on that display.
But why is it now standing in front of you, taunting you?
The possible applications for it race through your mind.
“Hey, yeah, I -COULD- put this in my front hallway/bedroom/backyard!”
Chances are, however, that this magical item will end up in a closet somewhere and never used. In the best-case scenario, it’ll fade into obscurity after a short period.
The same thing can also happen with snack purchases.
In fact, they build store layouts with this in mind.
They want you to think about how hungry or thirsty you are as you wait in line, leading you to buy a bag of chips or a soda you probably could have just gone without buying, but look oh, so tempting in the moment.
The key to holding yourself back from making these impulse purchases is to stop for a moment. When the bolt of inspiration hits, consider the application of the thing that caught your eye.
Can you see yourself using it frequently? Does it offer any true value to your life? Are you really so thirsty that you want to pay $2.50 for a bottle of Coke? Can you wait until you get home to have a snack or drink?
It can also be helpful to keep a snack or drink in the car so you can fall back on them if you get hungry or thirsty during your shopping adventures.
