In 1993, a movie we know and love (directed by the acclaimed Steven Spielberg and based on a bestselling novel by Michael Crichton) was released into theaters across the world.
Jurassic Park took the world by storm, showcasing state-of-the-art special effects unlike anything else seen at the time – that still hold up today.
In the movie, eccentric billionaire industrialist (aren’t they always eccentric, though?) John Hammond funded research and development of cloned dinosaurs and opened a theme park/zoo to share in the wonders of prehistoric life.
But, as luck would have it, the death of a staff member brings to light some safety issues, and Hammond’s investors start to get worried about the park’s viability.
In response, Hammond and his lawyer bring in two paleontologists and a mathematician (or, a chaotician as he prefers to be called) to do a trial run of the park’s attractions to prove its safety.
Naturally, the trial run goes horribly awry when a disgruntled park employee shuts down the electric fences (to escape after stealing some embryos for a rival corporation). As a result, all of the dinosaurs end up escaping and causing havoc for our heroes.
Before the events of Jurassic Park, Hammond envisioned a theme park affordable to everyone – but his investors and lawyers insisted on making it a cash cow.
It begs the question:
“If you had the means to bring something unique to the world, would you share it or do everything you could to maximize your profits from it?”
The concept of a dinosaur park is a bit far-fetched, but the question can apply to daily life – kind of like a litmus test.
If you were a lottery winner, would you share your newfound riches or build up your wealth for yourself?
