You’ve probably seen those nature documentaries like Planet Earth, where they take you around the world to see how things are out in the wild. From the harshness of desert life to the blindingly cold mountains, animal survival tales are presented to us with narration by a calming British voice.
It’s literally a jungle out there! (bonus points if you read that in David Attenborough’s voice)
These shows exist to give us a view of a life we wouldn’t usually get to see—all of the struggles and will of instinct present in the wild. But, our day-to-day isn’t really that different. I mean, we don’t typically find ourselves scaling a mountain to nab a plate of nachos (if you do, then I’m sorry for doubting you), but there are some similarities.
Imagine if Bear Grylls or David Attenborough narrated our lives. That dramatic music would be playing to build up tension as they explain our survival choices (you know, like buying unsalted butter over salted butter) or when we make a bad purchase that leads to a week of living off of ramen noodles. I’d definitely watch a show like that.
When you think about it, the struggles of wildlife we see in these shows are not too different from ours.
We have to eat, find somewhere to live, etc. – the difference is that our struggles are usually less metal.
Another major difference is the economy. We rely on money to get us what we need. The cheetah does not need to pay for that fawn he is munching on for dinner – he just relies on instinct and skill (and sharp teeth). I, for one, am thankful for that!
Financial planning is a matter of instinct and skill, too, of course. Just less bloodshed. Most days.
