It’s a rare person who finds a career that they are genuinely passionate about the first time they enter the workforce.

Sometimes you’ll get that nudge to start into a profession, and then after some soul-searching, realize it’s entirely not the right fit.

There’s nothing wrong with this! We sometimes need to explore before figuring out our values and passions. Or – maybe we just hated our old boss. Take some of these actors, for example.

Despite starting in what seemed to be a promising career in acting or even becoming legendary for their roles, they still chose for whatever reason, to move on and try something else.

As a disclaimer, I have no idea what it’s like to be an actor or the kind of stress and strain it puts on a person.

No doubt these people have a good reason for their change of heart. Anyway, without further ado, here’s a quick list of some of the most notable actors who said “arrivederci” to acting to pursue some other career.

5. Nikki Blonsky – Remember the painfully perky Tracy Turnblad from the movie version of Hairspray that was released in 2007? Yeah! Her! Well, Nikki took a few roles over the years (one as recently as 2019) but has since settled on being a hairdresser. I’ll skip the irony in this career choice.

4. Tom Selleck – It seems as though in addition to acting in various T.V. movies and the series Blue Bloods, Magnum P.I. himself has taken up residence in an avocado farm, where he tends and grows – you guessed it – avocados. Apparently, he hates avocados but still enjoys their existence for an odd reason – he finds them sexual. Yep, strange but true!

3. Freddie Prinze Jr. – We all remember the late 90s-early 2000s era of movies, where you couldn’t even flip through a U.S. Weekly without seeing Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, or Ryan Phillippe. They were all at the top of the world. Well, over the years, Freddie put less emphasis on acting and is now a writer/producer for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

2. Frankie Muniz – The Malcolm in the Middle star put acting on the backburner in 2008 to pursue a career in race car driving, which came to an end in 2009 with a car accident that left him with a brain injury that profoundly affected his memory. It’s gotten so bad that he barely remembers his time on the show that made him famous.

1. Rick Moranis – Everyone’s favorite nerd trope from the 80s and 90s left the world of showbiz behind in 1991 to care for his children after his wife’s death. He had pretty much given up live-action movies until very recently, opting only to perform voice-over roles, which still gave us the Rick Moranis fix we all secretly craved while allowing him the space he needed.

In all of these cases, none of them actually quit acting, presumably to keep the money rolling in and banking on their star power.
