There’s a saying: planning is about addressing the unexpected. It’s true with money, and it’s true in life.

Aleksander Doba is a Polish Kayaker who has paddled his boat not once but twice across the Atlantic Ocean.

He took the first trip when he was 65 years old. See, you’re never too old!

It took him 99 days to float from Senegal to Brazil. He relied only on muscle power. No sail.

After he got to Brazil, he planned to then Kayak to Washington, D.C. But that’s when the unexpected happened.

Pirates, of all things, attacked him and stole his boat.

He survived and actually made the trip a second time. I have a feeling this time he had more than his oars with him.

Needless to say, such a trip required a great deal of study before Doba launched. He had to know the currents, the weather, and perhaps most importantly, his body. Most would probably have perished from such a trip. You cannot just “wing it.”

Financial planning is very similar to a cross-Atlantic trip. A great deal of the unexpected, including pirates, can thwart your best intentions. That’s where we come in.
