Have you ever read the news about a new road construction project or what-have-you and wondered:

“Why does it take so long!?”

It’s a great question, especially since history shows people can accomplish a LOT in a very short time. Here’s a few well-known success stories that didn’t take forever to complete:

Disneyland – Walt’s dream of “The Happiest Place on Earth” went from a twinkle in his eye to cash-cow reality in just 366 days.

Apple iPod – Steve Jobs had a vision for getting into the music business and hired Tony Fadell to make it so in January 2001. The project was officially greenlit in March, started manufacturing in April, announced in October, and shipped the first production of iPods to customers in November – just 290 days later.

Amazon Prime – the membership service that continues to rock and roll was conceived of in December 2004 and announced on February 2nd, 2005 – just six weeks from idea to revenue juggernaut.

And if you’re somewhat techy-geeky, here’s a couple of key pieces of legendary software that got finished lickety-split – Ken Thompson created the first version of the Unix operating system in just three weeks, and Brendan Eich built the first prototype of the Javascript programming language in only 10 days.

Finally, on a more mercenary note, the famed VISA bank card (now used worldwide in millions of transactions daily) was created from thin air by Dee Hock in just 90 days. In that time, he managed to sign up more than 100,000 customers.

So big things CAN happen quickly. All it takes is vision and a willingness to work hard to make a dream come true.
