Mr. Miyagi: [after Julie succeeds in a task she found difficult] Congratulations, Julie-san.
Julie Pierce: Congratulations? That’s all you’re gonna say is congratulations? Don’t I get a belt or something?
Mr. Miyagi: Buy belt more.
Julie Pierce: No, I mean a karate belt. Brown belt, black belt.
Mr. Miyagi: Why need belt?
Julie Pierce: So everyone knows I’m good!
Mr.Miyagi: You know you good. That important thing.
Julie Pierce: Oh come on, even Elvis Presley got a black belt.
Mr. Miyagi: Borrow from Elvis next time see him.
The film, “The Next Karate Kid” is popular for a reason. It’s hard to not love the gentle, wise Mr. Miyagi, who trained Daniel in “The Karate Kid” and then went on to train a young girl, Julie, in the fourth installment of the franchise.
Julie was a typical high school teenager but with a twist. She was filled with anger. Her parents had been killed in an accident and she was living with her grandmother. She constantly fought with her and disrespected her rules.
Enter Mr. Miyagi who sent the grandmother back to his home in California for a break while he stayed as a guardian for Julie. Who of course, resented him at first.
Throughout the film, Mr. Miyagi helps Julie deal with her anger by teaching her martial arts. The reason we love the exchange above is because it highlights something every person needs to know.
Which is—if you know you’re good at doing something, then that’s what is most important.
Julie didn’t feel confident in who she was. And (as often is the case with insecure people), once she accomplished something, she sought approval. It’s understandable.
But really, knowing you’re good is good enough. It’s what makes you confident.
