What would be your guess if I asked you to name the oldest Christmas carol?

Not “Silent Night.”

Not “Away In a Manger.”

And definitely not “The Little Drummer Boy.”

In fact, it’s a song you likely have never heard!

First, Christians have celebrated Christmas since at least 375 A.D., when the Church first recognized December 25 as Christmas Day. They sang hymns – not carols. What’s the difference? Hymns are more solemn and have a religious message.

According to NPR, the first Christmas hymn was likely “Jesus Refulsit Omnium” (“Jesus, Light of All the Nations”), written by St. Hilary of Poitier in the 4th century. It’s not as catchy of a tune as “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas”, but is still a beautiful piece of music. You can hear it on YouTube, yourself.

It’s nice to know that even though something is really, really old… it still can sound fresh and beautiful.
