In Finland, home saunas are popular. They’re as common as having a dining room. In fact, they’re considered the sauna region of the world.

During Christmas, the sauna becomes a sacred space associated with long deceased ancestors. On Christmas Eve, it’s customary to disrobe and spend a respectful amount of time in the sauna to honor them. It’s called the joulusauna—or “The Christmas Sauna.” And yes, we’re talkin’ “Birthday Suit” time.

The Finnish sauna also is believed to be the home to its own sauna elf or saunatonttu, who requires care and respect. It’s tradition to leave some Christmas treats for the elf after enjoying Christmas dinner and exchanging gifts.

After the sauna session, Finns then head outdoors to partake of evening celebrations. Sounds fun. I’m just not sure if being packed into a sauna with my family would be a good idea.
