“In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.”
-In Flanders Fields, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae
Veterans Day is a time to reflect on those who have lost their lives in armed combat.
Most of our lives have been touched by wars throughout history, and we all have a story to tell.
Many of us had a grandparent who fought in World War II, or a parent in Vietnam, or possibly a close family member who fought in Afghanistan or Iraq. Perhaps you’ve served your country and stood on the front lines to fight for freedom. If so, thank you for your service.
It has become standard in some countries to take 1-2 minutes every November 11th, at 11:11 am to honor our fallen’s sacrifice for their country.
Veterans Day was first observed in the United Kingdom in 1919 on, you guessed it, November 11th at 11:11 am. This is the day that the treaty that ended World War I was signed.
(Fun fact: The day used to be called Armistice Day in the U.S., until it was renamed to Veterans Day after the Korean War. Many countries still under British rule, like our maple-loving neighbors to the north, call this holiday Remembrance Day.)
Many countries have unique customs that they follow, and some celebrate on different days of the year. You can find people pressing commemorative coins, hosting parades or rallies. It’s also common to wear red poppies on our clothing to celebrate those brave men and women.
The point of the day, regardless of how you observe it, is to take the time to remember the sacrifices made by our soldiers. The ones who made it home, and the ones that did not.
A staggering amount of lives have been lost in countless wars throughout the years. It seems fitting that we take a moment of silence to reflect on those brave men and women who put their lives on the line for our safety and freedom.
