No, not the ‘Rona.
An “attitude of gratitude.”
Years ago, the motivational speaking legend, Zig Ziglar, coined the term. He was one of the most grateful people you’d ever meet.
He has a well-known story that I’ll share, in condensed form.
Zig was scheduled to speak in Birmingham, Alabama, and a woman was desperate to meet him. As she shared with Zig’s assistant, she believed she had an impossible problem and wanted Zig’s help to solve it.
It turned out that the woman hated her job.
She said to Zig, “I’m just so glad to see you. I’ve got this horrible job. I hate it. I hate everything about it. I hate everybody down there.”
As Zig tells the story, he said, “I mean, you talk about negative nails, she was it. She said, ‘Can you help me?’”
Now Zig was a wise man. He took one look at her and realized two things:
- Everybody who comes to you with a problem is not necessarily looking for a solution.
- This woman wasn’t interested in a solution; she just wanted to gripe about it more.
Zig only had 10 minutes, so he had to cut to the chase. So, he said, “You know, Ma’am, I am afraid your problem is about to get worse!”
She said, “What do you mean?” He told her he believed her employer was going to fire her.
The woman was stunned. She thought that if anyone were to be fired, it would be “the other people” who were horrible at their job. Certainly not her. She was the “good guy.”
The woman wanted to know what she should do. And Zig came up with a brilliant solution.
I’ll share that solution with you tomorrow.
