Skyscrapers are fascinating.
They didn’t come into the world until the mid-1880s, and September 3 is National Skyscraper Day. They were made possible by the “Father of Skyscrapers,” Louis Sullivan.
Before Sullivan came along, the weight of a multi-story building had to be supported by the strength of its walls. Tall buildings put more strain on the lower sections of the building, and of course these “load-bearing” lower walls could only take so much weight.
To the rescue: cheap, versatile steel! This gamechanger entered the field in the second half of the nineteenth century and made it possible to build taller and taller buildings.
The mass production of steel was the main reason why so many skyscrapers were built during the mid-1880s.
In 1896, Louis Sullivan wrote:
It is the pervading law of all things organic and inorganic, of all things physical and metaphysical, of all things human, and all things super-human, of all true manifestations of the head, of the heart, of the soul, that the life is recognizable in its expression, that form ever follows function. This is the law.
“Form follows function” then became the mantra for modern architects.
