When the day winds down, wise men and women across the centuries have noted the importance of taking a moment to pause and reflect.
The specific ritual chosen is, of course, up to you.
For those of us driven to constantly self-improve, the website Business Insider offers a list of night-time routines highly disciplined people swear by:
Create an Execution Checklist – sounds ominous, but in fact, it’s merely a list of things you want to get done the next day. Then, when you wake up, you won’t be scratching your head wondering what to focus on – it’ll already be down on paper.
Take Time to Unwind – seems counter-intuitive, but the fact is, after a long day your brain and body need some space for creativity, curiosity, and innovation.
Journal What You’re Grateful For – it’s all-too-common to be jolted awake in the middle of the night by some worry (like money, work, family, or this pandemic). One way to alleviate those subconscious dreads is to write down 3-5 things you’re grateful for in your life. Gratitude empowers you to realize life doesn’t just happen to you. You play an active role in creating it.
Put Away Electronics – this is a recommendation from multiple sources. Scanning your tablet or cell phone for extended periods right up until you close your eyes is just not a good idea, especially you’re feeling overwhelmed by what life’s throwing at you. Put away the electronics, grab a pen and pad of paper, and just write down what matters most to you.
Studies show we’re all at our best after a great night’s rest – so whatever bedtime ritual you decide upon, make it a habit and part of your life.
One more healthy habit you should consider – set aside time to regularly assess your portfolio and investment strategy – to make sure it keeps pace with the always shifting marketplace.
