One of the sadder casualties of the coronavirus pandemic has been hundreds of community events canceled.
One such casualty has been the cancellation of the Roswell UFO Days, usually held during the second week in July. July 2 commemorates the supposed 1947 Roswell UFO Incident.
In 1996, Roswell locals organized a fun event to celebrate the anniversary of the crash. Festivities included a UFO-themed box car derby down Main Street and hospital gurney races with “aliens” strapped to the beds.
Since then, the festival has drawn thousands of visitors from across the world to join in the celebration each year. The small town of Roswell (population: 47,551) relies on the tourism from alien-focused visitors who descend upon the city during the commemorative event. In 2019, they attracted more than 15,000 visitors!
Storm Troopers, E.T.s, Transformers, Predators, USS Enterprise crew members, Men in Black, and little green men all gather together to enjoy looking at the sky and wondering what’s really out there.
There are delicious macarons shaped like flying saucers and filled with gelato, and a fantastic Alien Pet Contest.
The contest is a main attraction and takes place on the expansive lawn of the green-domed Roswell courthouse. Last year, contestants pulled in a cart with two chihuahuas (named Boo and Dasani) to the tune of “Baby Shark” – they won first place as “The Alien Sharks.” While the 2019 contestants were canine only, past years’ participants included cats, goats, horses, and lizards.
