Recently I watched the film “Twister.” Great movie.

It features Dr. Joanne “Jo” Harding (Helen Hunt) and Bill “The Extreme” Harding (Bill Paxton) as an estranged couple thrown together for a day as they pursue their storm-chasing dreams. In tow is their crazy, colorful crew of fellow storm-chasers (including a hilarious Philip Seymour Hoffman).

The film opens with a younger version of Jo experiencing an F5 tornado that killed her father while she and her mother took shelter. That pivotal moment created an obsession in Jo to discover how a tornado is born so a better warning system could be created.

Bill designed a tornado research device called DOROTHY, which would be launched within an active tornado. Hundreds of trackers would then be sucked up into the cyclone, which would deliver crucial data about the tornado’s movements.

It seems entirely plausible in the film…

The point was that these adrenaline junkies took great risks to get as close to a tornado as possible to study them. They were especially motivated to have DOROTHY succeed after a F4 tornado hits the home of Jo’s Aunt Meg and nearly took her life.

As Jo said (with pain and regret), “They had no warning.” The tornado flattened the town in minutes.
