Any athlete at the top of their game will tell you this:
Their success didn’t start in the gym. Or the field. Or even at the kitchen table. It started in their head.
The same can be said about the super wealthy. You see, they have a different set of beliefs, philosophies, and strategies than the average Joe. They’ve kicked the unproductive mindset that they identify as “middle class” and embraced new thoughts and ideas.
You might be holding some of those old thoughts. If so, I have a few ways to change course. Over the next few weeks, I’m going to cover some of the most common middle-class beliefs that may be blocking your earning potential. Here’s the first one:
Working hard, even at a job you hate, will make you rich.
Ever see the film “The Company Men?” It’s tough to watch. A few of the movie’s characters kept working at this corporation even though they weren’t happy. When their jobs were tanked by downsizing, it forced them to re-think their entire lives.
Most people commit to jobs they consider “tolerable.” They’re loyal for years while worrying about getting fired or dreaming of the day they finally get to retire. Why do they stay? Because in their mind, it’s the most effective way to get rich.
As Hadas Weiss, an anthropologist at the Madrid Institute for Advanced Study, argues in her book, We Have Never Been Middle Class: How Social Mobility Misleads Us, “… ideologies of the middle class seem inextricably linked to meritocracy—that our hard work gets us where we are; and then, where we are must be protected to ensure that our value remains.”
But the ultra-wealthy have a different way of looking at things. They believe in working for fulfillment. Once they find a job they love, they invest their heart and soul into it. And as a result, they become one of the best in their field and are rewarded with uncommon wealth.
It’s our passion to study the numbers and study the mindset of those who build a strong, wealthy life. At Money & Clarity, we would love to have the opportunity to learn about your hopes and dreams. And we’ll share more perspectives that could improve the way you think about money.
