Did you know there’s a bird who can spend up to 10 months out of 12 without landing even once on the ground?
The common swift bird lives in Europe and much of Asia. But their flight times are anything but common.
They drink and eat in the air, gobbling up any insects they can capture in-flight. They mate in the air and, like some larger birds, sleep in the air by gliding on a warm air current known as a “thermal.”
Common swifts are born to fly. Their bodies have adapted to almost non-stop flying. They have long and narrow wings, short and light legs, and have an almost perfect aerodynamic shape. Because they’re in the air constantly, they don’t have to worry about predators—except birds of prey.
Such an animal knows the meaning of endurance. And adaptability.
Sometimes it’s good to remember that if a bird can fly for months without landing, then we can persevere, too.
