If the email subject line doesn’t ring a bell, it’s the name of a song from the popular musical, Les Miserables.
The musical is based on Victor Hugo’s book, a French historical story first published in 1862. It’s considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century.
The story examines the nature of law and grace, the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love.
The powerful redemptive story of the main character, Jean Valjean, is inspirational. His re-invention of self is admirable. And his adoption of a young girl, Cosette, is generous and selfless.
Essentially, Jean Valjean made Cosette’s dreams come true. He rescued her from cruel caregivers and adopted her when her mother passed away, leaving her an orphan.
Because a bishop showed Valjean mercy at his lowest point, Valjean became determined to also show mercy to those around him.
A beautiful example of the ripple effect.
One act of kindness can cause a person to replicate it for someone else. It’s wonderful to witness this type of behavior, and frankly, our world needs more of it.
