I recently saw an inspirational video make the rounds on Facebook. It was a commencement speech made by Deshauna Barber, the 2016 Miss USA.
The title of the video is “Deshauna Barber: One Question Changed Her Life Forever.” In the speech, she describes meeting a woman while she was working at Target, who asked her some personal questions.
Turns out, the woman was a coach for beauty pageants and convinced Deshauna she had it in her to win the Miss USA pageant. Deshauna believed her and started to prepare for her state pageant.
Well, Miss Barber ended up losing the competition six years in a row. She was almost ready to give up, but her coach convinced her to keep trying. In the seventh year, she finally won and was crowned Miss District of Columbia in 2015. She then went on to win the Miss USA crown in 2016.
Deshauna said, “Do not fear failure. But be terrified of regret.”
Powerful words.
We think about this all the time. Not so much the failure part—but the regret. We meet with clients all the time who say they regret not coming to us sooner or regret not being as mindful of their money as they should have been.
