It’s the most iconic road in the USA – Route 66.
Stretching 2,450 miles from downtown Chicago all the way West across 8 states to sunny Santa Monica, Route 66 has been America’s highway since 1926 – a well-worn path beaten by “travelers, adventurers, desperados, and dreamers.”
Why is this road so famous?
You could attribute it to the TV show of the same name, which ran from 1960 to 1964 telling the story of Tod and Buz – two young adventurers tooling across the country in a hot Corvette searching to find their way in a fast-changing society.
Or – you could credit the popular R&B tune written in 1946 by Bobby Troup – “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66” – covered by multiple artists, including Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Depeche Mode, and John Mayer.
But I think it’s because the route cuts through the beating heart of our country – winding its way through cities and towns, big and small, offering a many splendored taste of Americana in all its glories, including:
- Meramec Caverns in Stanton, Missouri – where legend has it Jesse James and his gang hid out from the law.
- The Blue Whale of Catoosa, Oklahoma – definitely a bit weird and creepy, but one of the road’s most famous figurines.
- Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas – created as an art exhibit by 70’s hippies, it proudly displays a number of graffiti-covered cars nose deep in the dirt.
- Winslow, Arizona – where you can, just like the Eagles’ song says, enjoy the view while “Standing on the corner…”
Route 66 is a road packed with memories and dreams worthy of anyone’s bucket list.
