If you love food and you love statistics, here’s a whopper…
According to the National Chicken Council, it’s estimated that during the 2019 Super Bowl, Americans consumed 1.39 BILLION chicken wings.
According to the math wizards, that’s enough to circle the globe 3 times!
The popularity of the wing is a relatively recent development in US history. Up to the 20th Century, chicken didn’t play that major a role as a dinner staple – beef and pork were more readily available and more commonly found in the dishes of the day.
But commercial chicken farming exploded across the country, making the bird much more accessible to far more people… giving rise to an increased appetite for new ways to cook and prepare it.
In most cases, the entire chicken was cooked and indeed, for many years, the wing was considered the least appetizing piece – most were simply tossed away.
The pivotal event in the birth of the wing as a party staple took place during the 1960s at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York.
One legend has it that the matriarch of the family that owned the establishment – Teressa Bellissimo – invented the tasty treat now known as “Buffalo Wings” when son Dom and his friends dropped by for a midnight snack… mama was happy to oblige and in a fit of creative genius, whipped up a batch combining red pepper, butter, and hot sauce.
The rest – as they say – is history.
Chicken wings go great with any sport, not just football. So Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter – dig in and enjoy!
