Part of a solid strategy for saving money is knowing when to find a good deal.

And if you’re anything like my dear mother, you love a good deal. She excelled at Action Step #4: Smart Purchasing.

Most of the time, people flock to the stores to buy new items. But what about getting them used or re-furbished?

Before heading toward the store for say, a new treadmill, try checking out Craigslist or your local Facebook Marketplace. Many times a person will buy an expensive item and then use it just a few times.

Did you know there is also timing involved in finding a good deal?

For instance, look for industry holidays to grab the best offers. May is “Sleep Better Month,” making it the perfect time to buy a mattress, new bedding, or a CPAP machine.

March is National Crafts Month and May is also National Photography Month while June 29 is National Camera Day. Whatever the big-ticket item on your wish list, do a little research to discover if there’s a particular month or day tied to the product or service you want. You just may find a good deal.

Holidays are excellent times to find a good deal. We just finished one of the most popular times—the holiday season. But there’s also Presidents Day weekend, Memorial Day weekend, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend to find some great buys.

Also, the day you choose to make your purchase could make a difference. For example, Tuesday mornings and afternoons are said to be the best time for buying an airline ticket. Wednesdays are good for grocery shopping. Wednesday and Thursday mornings are great times to fill up your car’s gas tank.

And finally, you can find some great deals by purchasing items offseason. Buying a grill or outdoor furniture in September will probably cost less than if you bought them in May or June.

However, we’d like to think there’s no perfect time to discuss your retirement portfolio than now. At Matson & Cuprill every day is filled with strategies to give you even more than you expect. It’s our commitment to you.
