Ever hear of the term “coupling” in regards to athletics?

It’s something you might find Olympic commentators talking about.

One thing top-tier athletes focus on during both practice and competition is a concept known as “coupled motion.” Most sports fans have no idea how important it is, because when done correctly, it can significantly affect an athlete’s performance.

Take swimming for example. It’s more than just pulling with the arms and kicking with the legs. The very best swimmers work to perfect the details of how their body rotates during each stroke, or how they bring the arm forward after thrusting backward.

This applies to cyclists as well. In a circular pedal movement, the DOWN pedal stroke is only 25% of the total rotation. The other 75% involves FORWARD, BACK, and UP – and each offers an opportunity to apply muscle pressure to increase speed. By lifting your heel on the upstroke (cyclists call this “ankling”), they can increase momentum as other foot presses the pedal down.

It’s this total package of movement – orchestrated for maximum effectiveness – that delivers the slight edge premiere athletes need to compete at the very highest levels.

A similar principle exists in financial planning. When looking over a portfolio, you need to make sure you’re getting the most potential leverage from every element included. Bonds, Stocks, Commodities, Real Estate – all can work together to create a powerful package to keep your finances at the top of their game.
