There was a Paul Simon song that had the refrain, “Still crazy after all these years.”
Here’s a SAYING that’s still crazy good after MANY year – 2,000 in fact:
“Veni. Vidi. Vici.”
Rolls right off the tongue, doesn’t it?
“Veni. Vidi. Vici.”
Now, on the off chance you haven’t heard of it and don’t know what it means, here’s a bit of context.
It’s in LATIN – that language we used to teach in schools but rarely do anymore – and is attributed to famed Roman Emperor Julius Caesar.
It’s said he wrote these 3 little words in a note to the Roman Senate to let them know of his quick victory at the battle of Zela in 47 BC.
“Veni. Vidi. Vici.”
It basically translates to:
“I came. I saw. I conquered.”
So much said in just 6 syllables.
(Proves Shakespeare’s point when he said, “brevity is the soul of wit.”)
Makes you wonder how long modern catchphrases will linger into the lexicon…
I’m betting as “LOL” and “GOAT” fade into obscurity, “Veni. Vidi. Vici.” will keep going strong far into the future.
So hail Caesar, well said sir.
