So, how did you sleep last night?
If you’re like many of us, you probably didn’t get as much rest as you would’ve liked.
According to NPR, working Americans are getting by on less sleep these days – which makes that mid-afternoon slump all too common. The recommended 8 to 9 hours of slumber seems awfully hard to come by.
What’s worse is that some of our most sleep-deprived sufferers are those on the front lines keeping us healthy and safe. A recent study by researchers at Ball State University found that around half of police officers and health-care professionals reported getting less than even 7 hours… in fact, the normal was 6 or even 5 hours.
It’s not really all that surprising. These are high-stress occupations where split-second decisions can often make the difference between life or death.
But it’s not just them, more and more Americans report not getting enough sleep, which can have all kinds of negative health side-effects, including obesity, heart disease, anxiety, and many other problems.
So – in a 24/7 society where you’re challenged both at work and seduced by omnipresent media, how do you cope?
Experts recommend a few simple strategies, such as limiting caffeine and alcohol use, both of which can affect sleep.
In addition, setting boundaries by putting away the smart phone and turning off the TV for a time before going to bed can help… giving yourself a wind-down period without artificial light and excessive stimulation.
