Complaining about government is a time-honored tradition pretty much no matter where you live. It’s just a fact of life that the folks in power are going to do some things that just don’t seem to make sense.
Quite often, it boils down to a difference of opinion about this policy or that. But some ideas that actually turned into LAW can cause you to scratch your head in wonder. For example:
- In Georgia according to an 1879 statute, it’s illegal to sell, give away, or even apprentice a child under 12 to a circus as a “performer (or in the service of the performance of) rope or wire walking, begging, or as a gymnast, contortionist, circus rider, acrobat or clown.”
- In Tennessee, it’s a Class C Misdemeanor to “import, possess or cause to be imported into this state any type of live skunk, or to sell, barter, exchange or otherwise transfer any live skunk.” Zoos and some scientists do, however, get a pass.
- Massachusetts – the birthplace of the American Revolution – makes singing or playing an incomplete rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” punishable by a fine of no more than $100. If you kick off with “Oh say can you see…” then to keep that C-Note in your pocket you’d better keep going all the way through to “… and the home of the brave.”
- Finally, my favorite – in Connecticut, state law requires that for a pickle to deemed legally labeled as such, it must be able to bounce. No bounce, no dill.
Laws come and go, which is why it’s important to monitor your financial portfolio to make sure you’re not only in compliance, you’re taking advantage of any opportunities recent legislation may well offer.
